Champions league final 21/05/08

Well, I must say I was expecting a much duller game that the one that ended up occurring. Usually you get a game with two big names like Arsenal v Man Utd, Liverpool v Chelsea and they are the dullest, defensively minded games of football that you will ever see, yet for some reason, maybe because it was played overseas, maybe because it was the first ever all British Champions league final or maybe just by sheer chance, it was a great game.

As a fairly neutral spectator, though as a Spurs fan I had my desire for Man Utd over Chelsea, it was a good end to end game with lots of chances, yet what we all really want in a final is the penalty shootout, and this year certainly did not fail to deliver!

It was inevitable that Cristiano Ronaldo, the best player by miles all season, would miss the penalty and perhaps even more fitting that Chelsea’s best player would also miss, yet you can probably guess which one was more cut up about it.

People have been talking all week for some reason about how sorry they feel for Terry and Chelsea, but to me I think its finally a bit of comeuppance for the child-like and unsporting behavior that they have been showing for the last few years. Finally we have seen that money will only go so far, and I am delighted that Chelsea’s silverware cupboard doesn’t need to be expanded just yet. Drogba’s sending off and Terry’s miss at the end were deserved, perhaps not on the night where they had played well, but over the season where they have showed alot of disrespect to the officials and their opponents.

Overall though, great final, and I really hope to see as good a final as that in the years to come, hopefully with Tottenham in contention ;)
